Abbey Junior School, Reading

The Abbey's alumni include the novelist Jane Austen and TV presenter Kate Humble. The Junior School forest garden was planted in 2007 to the side of a new classroom block. The design makes the most of the fairly shaded site and incorporates a range of sustainable features in the hard landscaping, including water harvesting, a living willow fedge and oak cordwood for raised beds. The planting includes a range of useful plants which were selected for their maximum educational value right across the curriculum, from herbs, which can be used to make perfumes and potions, to fruiting trees and shrubs which originate from around the world. It has matured into a beautiful space which is maintained by the gardening club and used by the whole school.
