Food security
Developing sustainable farming systems that can ensure that everyone has access to healthy food
“Food security exists when all people, at all times, have access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life”.
UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, 1996
Worldwide about 850 million people are chronically hungry due to extreme poverty and six million children die of hunger every year. Climate change, bio-fuels, a growing world population and shortages of water and oil will create even more competition for food. The experience of growing food in the school garden can give children a better understanding of the food supply chain and an incentive to find out how farmers around the world are developing sustainable ways of increasing production.
